F1 2014: Brazilian GP Preview – Predict It If You Dare

The penultimate round of the 2014 championship does not have the ability to decide the driver’s title. However, the Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace circuit is one steeped in some of the most dramatic formula 1 history.

Around its 4.309 kilometers this track has re-written many a driver’s fate. There isn’t a need to look too far back to find these extraordinary moments. The 2012 race was described by Sebastian Vettel as one of the toughest of his career. The afternoon oozed tension and amid changing weather conditions, safety-cars, a litany of pitstops the Red Bull driver was also involved in a collision. Seemingly on course for his third consecutive title the German found himself pointing the wrong way on the first lap of the race. Vettel staged a gallant comeback which was ultimately enough to clinch the title.

For a brief period in 2008 Ferrari’s Felipe Massa thought himself to have won the world championship. But in the most nail-biting finish in decades Lewis Hamilton scraped to the championship title on the very last lap, into the final turn, by overtaking Toyota’s Timo Glock. A year prior, in 2007, Kimi Raikkonen had, mathematically, the least amount of chance of winning the title. With only ten points on offer the Finn was seven adrift of championship leader Lewis Hamilton. However, the spectacular drama that defines the Brazilian GP saw the Iceman theatrically snatch the title from McLaren as Hamilton was unable to recover from a technical issue suffered in the race.

20013 Brazilian Grand PrixSo you see there is much to suggest that the 2014 Brazilian GP is going to be anything but straightforward. Hamilton starts the weekend with a healthy lead over teammate Nico Rosberg but it, literally, can be wiped out in matter of seconds. In saying this, the pressure still resides in the Rosberg side of the garage. The German driver will be desperate to beat his teammate at this race and he must. There is no alternative for Rosberg this weekend. Though Abu Dhabi has the gimmicky double-points on offer there is little doubt that Rosberg would not want to put all his eggs in that foolish basket.

The only thing Rosberg can do this weekend is his best. The question remains whether Rosberg’s best is enough to beat his teammate who is on a roll of five consecutive grand prix victories. More significantly, Hamilton undoubtedly holds the psychological edge; the dismissive overtake in Austin for the lead of the race ensured that. Yet, this is still Brazil and here dramatic turnarounds have never been in short supply.

The circuit itself is quite technical with a mixture of different corners littered throughout the undulating landscape of its Sao Paulo location. “It’s ahamilton tricky circuit to get right but that makes it all the more exciting; there’s more opportunities to overtake there than at other tracks, and the twisty infield section towards the end of the lap is a real challenge as you’re constantly on the limit trying not to outbrake yourself, so when you get it spot on it’s really rewarding,” says Jenson Button.

The weather in these parts tends towards the extreme too. Here, track temperatures of 63 degrees Celcius have been recorded while other weekends have been blighted by monsoon levels of rain. For the 2014 Brazilian GP, the forecast predicts a mostly overcast weekend with the possibility of showers and temperatures in the early twenties.

It’s bumpy, it’s technical, the weather is changeable and something dramatic is bound to happen. It can only be Brazil’s Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace.

Video: Brazilian GP Memories: 2003 Brazilian GP Mayhem in the Rain

Here are some of the moments during the 2003 Brazilian Grand Prix that made it one of the craziest races we’ve seen. The same race where Giancarlo Fisichella won his first ever Grand Prix after Jaguar’s Mark Webber crashed heavily at the exit of T12. The crash resulted in parts of the tyre barrier being strewn out on track. What followed was very scary. A very young Fernando Alonso in his Renault exited T12 with a great amount of speed and slammed into a tyre that was lying in the middle of the track.

The race was then red flagged and medical personnel attended to Alonso who managed to get out of his car but collapsed back on to the ground at the side of the track.

It was truly the craziest of races where everything that could go wrong, went wrong.

  • Weather Report for the 2014 Formula 1 Grande Premio Petrobras do Brazil 2014(Brazilian Grand Prix)

Round 18 of the Formula 1 World Championship brings us to Sao Paulo Brazil for the Brazilian Grand Prix.

We can always count on the Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace to throw us a curve ball or two and it almost never disappoints. When it rains at the circuit, it pours down with reckless abandon and throws things out of balance. We can expect some of that rain for this weekend’s race as thundershowers and rain is expected throughout the weekend. It should be fine and dry in the mornings but towards the afternoon we can expect the thundershowers to hit the circuit.

Although F1 is the most technologically advanced sport in the world, they still have not figured out to accurately predict the weather. Temperatures will start warm for the weekend but things will gradually cool down till the race, with temperatures expected to peak at just 21 degrees Celsius for the race. Friday we can expect some sun with thundershowers predicted in the afternoons. The same can be said for Saturday.

Pirelli will bring along the yellow soft compound tyre and the while medium compound tyre. This was revised from their previous choice of medium and hard after the circuit was resurfaced. Pirelli say that the soft and the medium compound tyres will suit the circuit’s slow to medium speed corners where there cars rely on the mechanical grip and also some of the fast corners.

With the rain expected we could see the intermediates and the full wet tyres, which means a whole different tyre strategy all together. We can be sure however, it will be an exciting one.

Below is a snapshot of the weekends weather for the 2014 Formula 1 Grand Premio Petrobras do Brasil and also the current conditions in Sao Paulo complete with weather satellite.

F1 2014: Caterham to Race Abu Dhabi

The Caterham team is expected to race in the final round of the 2014 season in Abu Dhabi.

After missing the United States grand prix and this weekend’s Brazilian grand prix there seems to be some light as the end of the tunnel for the Caterham team. The administrators have announced that they expect the team to be racing in the season-ending race in Abu Dhabi.

“We are now extremely hopeful that we will be going to Abu Dhabi,” Finbarr O’Connell told Reuters ahead of Sunday’s Brazilian Grand Prix, the penultimate round of the championship.

“I think I’ve got enough confidence now to say I’d be very surprised if we were not racing in Abu Dhabi,” he added in a telephone conversation. “I’m now really hopeful for the future of the team.”

Further, the team has been listed as an entry for the 2015 season under the name of 1Malaysian Racing Team. Similarly, Marussia, who has been facing their own financial difficulties, has been included on the entry list as Manor Grand Prix Racing.

  • F1 2014: All Change At Sauber

F1 2014: All Change At Sauber

The Sauber F1 team has announced the signing of both Marcus Ericsson and Felipe Nasr for the 2015 season.

The Swede, Ericsson, was the first driver announced by the mid-field team and team principal Monisha Kaltenborn believes that the 24-year-old has shown enough during the season to warrant his signing.

“He did not have an easy rookie season this year in Formula 1, however, he kept calm and improved continuously, mainly in the last races. We are convinced that signing Marcus can give the team a fresh impetus,” said Kaltenborn.

Ericsson’s future in the sport was in doubt as his Caterham team were placed under administration and faced the threat of not returning to the Formula 1 grid. “Fresh from a very turbulent week, I was suddenly given my best early Christmas present ever,” he said.”It will be a great challenge. I will give my very best to develop both as a driver, and to be part of the challenge to put Sauber back closer to the front where it belongs.”

Brazilian GP2 driver Felipe Nasr will join Sauber as Ericsson’s teammate for 2015.

“We have been following Felipe’s career path for some time now. He fully deserves his position in Formula 1 having had a very successful career in the junior categories. We are happy that he will be driving for our team next year. This means that Brazil will have one more young and talented driver in the sport,” explained Kaltenborn

In addition to racing successfully in the GP2 series Nasr has spent the 2014 season as the reserve and test driver for the Williams Martini team.

“This is an unforgettable moment that I owe to all of those who have supported me,” he said. “I had a wonderful year at Williams, where I learned a lot and prepared myself to be a race driver in Formula 1.””Today the dream has come true. Sauber was responsible for the arrival in F1 of great names such Felipe Massa, Kimi Raikkonen, Robert Kubica and Sebastian Vettel. I am proud now to also be part of this racing family.”

Meanwhile, current Sauber driver Adrian Sutil has said that expected to be retained by the team for next season. The German was quoted in Austin as saying that he was committed to the team and was looking forward to improving its performance and position in the field.

Broadcast Times for the Formula 1 Grande Premio Petrobras Do Brasil 2014(Brazilian Grand Prix)

The penultimate round of the Formula 1 World Championship brings us to the Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace in Sao Paulo, Brazil for the Brazilian Grand Prix.

Usually the final Grand Prix of the season, but this year things are a bit different. But that doesn’t matter. No matter where on the calendar you put the Brazilian Grand Prix, you are guaranteed unpredictability in the race. We don’t even have to remember that far back either. Who can forget the 2012 race where Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso fought to the bitter end to just narrowly loose out to Red Bulls Sebastian Vettel for the Drivers World Championship.

The drivers title for 2014 is still wide open. Either one of the Mercedes drivers could win it. Love it or hate it, the double points rule at the final race of the season does make things very unpredictable. But at the same time it casts a shadow over the drivers title if the driver who wins it, wins because of the double points in the final race. Will it be a deserved title or not?

Lower down the order, the rest of the teams are still fighting for position for the Constructors Championship. Red Bull look to have second place all sewn up. The battle for third between Ferrari and Williams is still ongoing. The slow and twisty nature of the Sao Paulo track will suit the Ferrari’s more than the Williams. Ferrari on the other hand need both their drivers to finish in strong positions. Williams will make the best out of the situation. Ferrari need to weary of McLaren who are just 49 points adrift.

This week times will not be as late as they were for the American Grand Prix, but we can expect early evening times for the people in Europe and Africa, with early morning times for the folks over in the eastern regions of the world.

Here are your broadcast times for this weekends Brazilian Grand Prix(All times are GMT+2):

  • F1 2014: US GP Review – Hammer-time In Texas

    F1 2014: US GP Review – Hammer-time In Texas

In general terms a conundrum is defined as a difficult and confusing problem. In Nico Rosberg terms the conundrum is Lewis Hamilton. The latest win in Texas gives Hamilton five consecutive race victories and leaves Rosberg without any answers.

As the weekend started to take shape it was Rosberg who stepped up to the qualifying plate. The German got the better of Hamilton by a hefty four tenths which Hamilton would later chalk up to “brake issues.” Nevertheless, at the first hurdle it was Nico Rosberg who pulled it off.

The first stint of the race too was all Rosberg as he controlled the initial laps. The sting was taken out of the start of the grand prix as a collision between Force India’s Sergio Perez and Sauber’s Adrian Sutil brought out the safety car on lap one. Both drivers’ race was ended by the coming together and Perez has been given a seven place grid penalty for the Brazilian GP.

The two Williams drivers, very much embroiled in a constructor’s fight with Ferrari, shadowed the Mercedes duo for the first stint of the race without ever being able to launch a serious threat on any of the first two positions. For the most part Felipe Massa looked set for the final step of the podium but Red Bull’s plucky Aussie once again lived up to his billing. Daniel Ricciardo snatched third from the Brazilian in yet another afternoon of mighty fine wheel-to-wheel racing.

Lewis Hamilton Press ConferenceBy lap 24 Hamilton has eroded the two-and-a-half second gap that Rosberg had steadily built and flung his car down the inside of Turn 12 and into the lead of the race. It wasn’t a swashbuckling, throw caution to the wind kind of move either from Hamilton. It was calculated and infused with an ominous hunger. Five straight race wins sends quite an imposing message to the other side of the garage.

For once Valterri Bottas finished second to teammate Massa in a quiet fifth place. Fernando Alonso dragged a reluctant Ferrari up to sixth and managed to hold off a late charge from Sebastian Vettel. The Red Bull driver’s didn’t look sharp after a pitlane start but a late stop for fresh rubber breathed some life into his afternoon. Kevin Magnussen brought his McLaren home in eighth ahead of Lotus’ Pastor Maldonado. The Lotus turned out to be the surprise package of the weekend and ran competitively in the points for most of the afternoon.

Jean-Eric Vergne was stripped of ninth place after incurring a penalty for a collision with Romain Grosjean. The Frenchman ultimately finished tenth. The mid-field battle for points was responsible for some spicy wheel-to-wheel battles as several drivers duked it out. Both Jenson Button and Kimi Raikkonen finished outside the points and a lap down on the leaders.

Besides the mega quick Lewis Hamilton-shaped conundrum that Nico Rosberg has he faces an even bigger dilemma. Rosberg’s problem isn’t thatNico Rosberg he can’t win it; it’s that he doesn’t know how to win it. He hasn’t had to deal with an unrelenting teammate before certainly not while at the same time being the focus of so much attention. Hamilton’s move to take the lead of the race came from pretty far back and it was Rosberg’s caution that consigned him to second best. This isn’t a call to throw all rationality out of the window but through all of this sport’s history it has been courage that has made and defined its champions. As impressive and consistent as Rosberg has been this season he just doesn’t seem to have the uncontained hunger to win it.

It is far from over and Brazil’s legendary Autodromo Carlos Pace has always been the wildcard in the Formula 1 calendar. Here, the unpredictability seems to ratchet up a notch or two and it tends delivers some of the most astounding results. Rosberg faces a deficit of twenty-four points and call to unleash all he has on a near unbeatable teammate.

  • Vergne Slapped With 5-Second Penalty

    Vergne Slapped With 5-Second Penalty

Toro Rosso’s Jean-Eric Vergne was slapped with a 5-second penalty after the United States Grand Prix for his collision with Lotus’ Romain Grosjean in the closing stages of the race.

Vergne finished the race in P9, but after being handed a 5-second penalty, he was classified as P10.

Vergne crashed into Grosjean towards the end of the race with somewhat of a late dive down the inside into T1. Both did, in fact, make the corner, but Verge carried more speed and ran wide which resulted him in colliding with Grosjean’s Lotus. Grosjean was pushed wide and conceded another place to his team mate, who moves up to P9 after Vergne’s penalty.

“Jean-Eric came into Turn 1 and bumped into me, broke my front wing and my floor and I couldn’t really recover,” said Grosjean

“I was on the radio saying ‘guys, that’s not fair, he [should] get something’, because I could have got P8.

    Vergne-Grosjean Incident CoTA 2014

“I may not get my points and position but it’s good that Pastor scored and we were finally able to fight with Ferrari and Toro Rosso.”

Vergne who is fighting for a 2015 seat at Toro Rosso felt that he needed to do something and he could not just wait behind his fellow countryman.

“I had to do something, I was not going to stay sitting behind waiting,” Vergne explained.

“I saw the opportunity and I went for it. He closed the door but it was too late.”

  • Perez was “Reckless” – FIA

    Perez was “Reckless” – FIA

Force India’s Sergio Perez will drop 7 places down the grid for this weeks Brazilian Grand Prix in Sao Paulo after being branded as “reckless” by the FIA after his collision on the opening lap of the United States Grand Prix with Sauber’s Adrian Sutil.

The Mexican also gets two points deducted off his super licence for his behavior.

The collision happened on the opening lap at T15 at the Circuit of Americas. Perez dived down the inside of Sutil to attempt a pass but looked like he went too deep on the brakes and could not slow down sufficiently to avoid hitting Sutil. He made slight contact with Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen in the process. But there was no damage reported by Raikkonen

A statement about the incident from the FIA read as follows: “The driver of car No.11 (Perez) could not reasonably have expected to complete the manoeuvre. His collision with car No.99 (Sutil) was reckless.”

Perez described the incident as “Unfortunate”

“What happened today is really unfortunate,” he said

“I made a move on Adrian [Sutil] at turn 15 when he left the door open, so I went up the inside. Then Adrian started to close the door and I had to try and brake later than him.

“By doing so I was unable to avoid contact with Kimi [Raikkonen], which caused me to make contact with Adrian also. I just didn’t expect Kimi to be in that position. It’s a big shame because I had a great chance to keep up my run of points finishes and I was determined to do well in such an important race. I feel very sorry for all my fans who came to support me this weekend and I’m disappointed I could not give them a race to remember.”

Adrian Sutil was left seething after the accident as he had the best starting position for the team and for himself.

“Idiot! Perez just F**king kicked me off the circuit!”he said over the radio to his team.

“It was such a shame and so disappointing and so unnecessary,” Sutil said.

“We were hoping for a great result today and because of a silly action like this we missed everything.

“It is very disappointing that we missed our biggest chance of points because of this move.”
