Alonso to Red Bull? A new spin from the F1 rumour mill

Fernando Alonso

It has emerged that there is a possibility that Red Bull are considering Alonso as Mark Webber’s replacement.

The F1 rumour mill is spinning a few tales following a meeting between Fernando Alonso’s agent, Luis Garcia Abad and Christian Horner with the latest rumour out that we could see an Alonso to Red Bull move in 2014.

Sources are claiming that a conversation took place between Abad and Horner at the Hungarian Grand Prix but both Abad, and Ferrari, insist that he was discussing the future of Carlos Sainz Jr who he also represents.

The details of their conversation are unknown but Christian Horner has admitted that Alonso could be a possible candidate.

Alonso is in a contractual agreement with Ferrari though – signed until 2016 and team principal Stefano Domenicali has reiterated that Alonso is going nowhere. “First of all we have a contract with him,” Domenicali is quoted as saying, “No doubt, Fernando is an asset for the team. We need him to work very closely with everyone, because after all this is a difficult moment in the season. We have to deliver a job. Full stop. This is the same for everyone, not only for him.”

Christian Horner after the Hungarian Grand pridAlonso meanwhile, has reiterated that he is still “happy” at Ferrari, despite not being in a championship winning situation at the moment. Alonso told Autosport, “I am very happy. Obviously we need to improve the car and we are going to have chances to win the world championship. August with four weeks with no F1 is a very dangerous period for you guys [the media]. Hopefully we will have a quiet summer.”

Christian Horner insists that Red Bull are looking for the best possible drivers. Until now only Raikkonen and Ricciardo have seemed to be in the running. “I think for us we want to make sure that nothing waivers in our mind of putting together the right team package for next year with the two fastest drivers that we can, who will work collectively well together and achieve the best results for the team,” he said.

So it remains to be seen what will happen at Red Bull but we are expecting to hear soon with further rumours doing the rounds that we could know at the next race.
