Penalties for the 2017 US Grand Prix
Before Free Practice one had got underway at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin Texas there were a few drivers that had a number of power unit components changed which will drop them down the grid a few places.

Renault has introduced a few 2018 parts to their current engines and have fitted them to their power units.

F1 debutant, Brendon Hartley has had a rude welcome to F1. On his first race he’ll start with a 25-place grid penalty against his name.
- 6th Internal combustion engine – 10 grid place drop(1st of the 6th element)
- 6th MGU-H – 5 grid place drop
- 5th Energy store – 5 grid place drop
- 5th Control electronics – 5 grid place drop.
Nico Hulkenberg – 20 grid place drop
- 6th MGU-H – 10 grid place drop (1st 6th element)
- 5th Internal combustion engine – 5 place grid drop
- 5th Turbo charger – 5 place grid drop
Stoffel Vandoorne – 5 grid place drop
- 8th Internal combustion engine – 5 place grid drop
- 9th Internal combustion engine – 10 place grid drop
- 11th MGU-H – 5 place grid drop
- 11th Turbo charge – 5 place grid drop

Williams

Williams have been handed a 10 000 Euro suspended fine and team reprimand for failing to hand back a set of tyres 3 second too late.

This is the second time that Williams is guilty of this, but because Williams was 3 seconds late the stewards decided to hand down the suspended fine.

Max Verstappen – 15 grid place drop
- 6th Internal combustion engine – 10 grid place drop (1st 6th element)
- 6th MGU-H – 5 grid place drop
Kevin Magnussen – 3 grid place drop
- Magnussen will drop three places after impeding Force India’s Sergio Perez in Qualifying. Perez, who was behind Magnussen on track, was on a flying lap while Magnussen was on an out-lap and received the incorrect information from the team. He also gets one penalty point on his super license which brings his total to 8 points for the 12 month period.
Lance Stroll – 3 grid place drop
- Like Kevin Magnussen, Stroll receives a 3-place grid drop for impeding Romain Grosjean during qualifying. Stroll was on a cool down lap and had just rounded Turn 19 and was on the racing line on his way to the pits. Grosjean behind was on a flying lap and closed up to Stroll. At the same time Kvyat was off the racing line to the left of Stroll, who decided to go off the track to the right. Grosjean behind had already decided to pass Stroll off the track and almost collided with the Williams. Stroll also gets 1 penalty point on his super license, his first in his F1 career.

Maldonado On Top of Time Sheets on Day 3 of Barcelona Test

Lotus’ Pastor Maldonado claimed the fastest time of the day on the 3rd day of the Barcelona test on the super soft tyres.

Maldonado’s run in the afternoon seen him cross the line with a 1:24.348, 0.391s ahead of Max Verstappen in the Toro Rosso who also did a run on the super softs. “We achieved a lot today and it was great to complete so many laps and end the day as the fastest car,” said Maldonado.

Although the rain started to fall later in the day the drivers still managed to put in a respectable amount of laps one the rain had stopped.

The redesigned seal that was intended to fix McLaren’s MGU-K issue did not work as planned. This mean that Button had to run the day on reduced power completing only 24 laps for the day.

Defending World Champion, Lewis Hamilton took third spot of the day ahead of Marcus Ericsson in the Sauber. Hamilton still battling an illness said it was very tough day for him physically. That didnt seem to affect his pace too much though and he completed a marathon 101 laps.

After an out lap spin that put him into the gravel trap, Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel completed the day with 105 laps with the 5th fastest time of 1:26.407 which was just marginally faster than Daniil Kvyat in the Red Bull. Apart from the out lap incident. Vettel enjoyed a relatively trouble free day out on track.

Felipe Massa and Valtteri Bottas both drive for Williams on the day which seen Massa finishe 7th fastest and Bottas 9th fastest.

Mercedes test driver Pascal Wehrlein was back at Force India today. He completed 81 laps with the fastest time for him on the day of 1:27.333 in the 2014 VJM07.

The first test for the 2015 Formula 1 Season gets underway tomorrow in Jerez, Spain.

The test will run from 01 – 04 February. This is how the drivers will line up on each day

Vettel and Webber make it a 1-2 in FP3 in America

Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber made it a Red Bull 1-2 at the end of FP3 at the Circuit of Americas.

In a rather straight forward FP3, the two Red Bulls once again stamped their authority on the session with Vettel finishing off the session in P1 with a 1:36.733. Webber finished the session in P2, 0.203s off the pace of Vettel with a 1:36.936. Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton slotted into P3 with a 1:37.064. Sauber’s Nico Hulkenberg and Lotus’ Romain Grosjean were P4 and P5 respectively.

The woes for Ferrari continued this session with Fernando Alonso finishing off the session in P11 and Felipe Massa finishing off in P17. Those were the same two positions they held with the prime and the option tyre, showing that there was no improvement in pace from them throughout the session. It will be very hard for them to make Q3 and it will be a surprise if one of them do make it into Q3.

Williams’ Valtteri Bottas showed very good pace throughout the session, with his race engineer telling him that they were going quicker and quicker throughout the session.

If the times of FP3 are anything to go by, we are in for a very interesting qualifying. We could see a few surprises.
