  • Hamilton fastest for second Canadian GP practice session

Hamilton fastest for second Canadian GP practice session

Reining F1 champion Lewis Hamilton continued to show his muscle as he clocked the fastest time during the second practice session ahead of this weekend’s Canadian GP.

Team mate Nico Rosberg drifted in 0.526s behind with Sebastian Vettel splitting the Mercedes in his Ferrari.

Hamilton’s time of 1:14.212 on Pirelli’s Ultra Soft tyres was 0.272s ahead of Vettel – also on Ultra Softs – and saw the Brit take a clean sweep for the day.

While there is a more-or-less 0.7s difference in Super Soft and Ultra Soft times, the softest compound tyre did show some longevity – with Rosberg completing 29 laps on the purple rubber. This could well turn the Canadian GP into a one-stop race when paired with the soft tyres.

The Red Bull drivers came home fourth and fifth fastest with young Max Verstappen edging in 0.012s ahead of his team mate Daniel Ricciardo. Both drivers were almost a second down on Hamilton’s time.

Valterri Bottas and Jenson posted identical times for the 6th and 7th spots while Kimi Raikkonen brought his Ferrari home in a disappointing 8th place on the timesheets. Following the session, Raikkonen made no secret of his disappointment saying that they “struggled to make any sense of the car”.

Nico Hulkenberg and Carlos Sainz Jr. rounded out the top 10.

Fernando Alonso finished the session 11th fastest on used ultra softs ahead of Sergio Perez.

Felipe Massa set the 13th fastest time ahead of Daniil Kvyat and Romain Grosjean who was half a second adrift of the Russian’s time.

Renault’s Kevin Magnussen finished 16th and Sauber drivers Felipe Nasr and Marcus Ericsson were 17th and 19th, with Haas’ Esteban Gutiérrez sandwiched between them.

Joylon Palmer finished 20th for Renault, with Pascal Wehrlein and Rio Haryanto completing the Canadian GP field for Manor – 0.4 seconds between the two. Haryanto’s time was 3.2 seconds behind Hamilton.

  • Rosberg moves Mercedes ahead in second Spanish GP practice session

Rosberg moves Mercedes ahead in second Spanish GP practice session

Formula One World Championship leader Nico Rosberg moved Mercedes ahead of the Ferraris during the second practice session for this weekend’s Spanish GP.

Rosberg’s lap time of 1:23.922 on Pirelli’s soft tyres saw him finish the session 0.254s faster than his Ferrari rival Kimi Raikkonen. The Finn, who had been informed by his crew that he had a fuel system problem and needed to head back to the pits halfway through the session, finished 5 tenths faster than the second Mercedes of Lewis Hamilton. Sebastian Vettel brought the second Ferrari home fourth fastest.

Carlos Sainz Jr enjoyed a great session in front of his home crowd in fifth place with Daniel Ricciardo going sixth fastest. Spanish GP home favourite Fernando Alonso finish seventh in his McLaren with Max Verstappen, Sergio Perez and Nico Hulkenberg rounding out the Top 10.

Jenson Button suffered a loss of power during his session and was forced to limp his McLaren back to his garage where he stayed until the latter stages of FP2. He managed to go 12th fastest ahead of Romain Grosjean who complained that his Haas F1 car was very difficult to drive.

Kevin Magnussen was 14th and Kvyat 15th – ten places behind his new Toro Rosso team mate.

Joylen Palmer, Spanish GP second practiceJoylen Palmer got very little running after suffering a high speed tyre failure along the pit straight. Pirelli are still investigating the cause of the failure.

Palmer did manage to return to the track 15 minutes before the end of the session and finished 17th fastest ahead of the two Manor drivers, Pascal Wehrlein and Rio Haryanto.

Sauber had a miserable session with both drivers substantially slower than their Manor rivals.

Esteban Gutierez finished between the two Saubers after also having his running limited by an electronics issue.

  • F1 Australian GP FP2: Hamilton fastest, Rosberg crashes

F1 Australian GP FP2: Hamilton fastest, Rosberg crashes

The Mercedes F1 team suffered pretty mixed fortunes in another practice session dominated by unpredictable wet weather conditions. Lewis Hamilton finished on top of the time sheets once again in FP2 ahead of the Australian Grand Prix, while his team mate Nico Rosberg suffered a crash into the barriers at turn 6 during a very wet session.

The wet weather put a real damper on FP2, with conditions only improving ever so marginally during the session. While we got to see some slick running during the first free practice session, drivers were not able to run on anything better than Pirelli’s intermediate rubber during FP2.

Most teams preferred a cautionary approach with seven drivers failing to set a time and three not venturing on to the track at all for any FP2 running. Nico Rosberg’s turn 7 crash early on in the session caused extensive damage to the front wing of his W07. Rosberg was forced to abandon his Mercedes track side for fear of causing further damage to the car. Team Principal Toto Wolff confirmed that Rosberg had been running one of the team’s new S-duct noses. Mercedes does have spares for later in the weekend but sent Hamilton out with an old spec wing so as not to risk losing another one.

Nico Rosberg FP2 AustraliaWith Rosberg forced out of FP2, team mate Hamilton was left to head up the field. He posted a time of 1:38.841. The time was nearly 10 seconds slower than his top time posted for FP1. It was good enough though to finish nearly half a second clear of Nico Hulkenberg in his Force India. Force India are looking impressive – Sergio Perez had set the fastest first and second sectors before losing the rear of his car in Turn 12. There was potential for him to better Hamilton’s time but as conditions worsened his chances of taking a time at the top were quickly snuffed.

Kimi Raikkonen was third quickest for Ferrari, followed by Daniel Ricciardo and Carlos Sainz. The McLaren duo of Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button followed in sixth and seventh places.

Sebastian Vettel – who had not completed a timed lap in FP1 despite being the first driver out on track – set the eight fastest time with Sergio Perez and Daniil Kvyat rounding out the top 10.

Esteban Gutierrez ended the FP2 session 11th in the Haas and Pascal Wherlein finished 12th fastest ahead of Romain Grosjean, Rio Haryanto and Rosberg. The remaining seven drivers chose not to set times and Marcus Ericsson, Felipe Nasr and Max Verstappen opted to remain in the dry comfort of their pit garages.

The weather for tomorrow is currently still rainy at times but more favourable than Friday conditions.

  • Hamilton holds the lead in second practice

Hamilton holds the lead in second practice

Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton continued to set the pace during Friday’s practice sessions for the Chinese Grand Prix as he ended the second practice session almost half a second faster than Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen.

Hamilton posted a time of 1:37.219 during the low-fuel runs on Option tyres finishing 0.443s ahead of Raikkonen. The Finn’s performance on the soft tyres was very impressive and long run pace on the Prime tyres was also right up there with Mercedes. The stage certainly seems set for an epic battle this weekend.

Red Bull’s struggles continued with Daniel Ricciardo only making it out of the garage at the 45 minute mark, but the Australian driver managed to post the third fastest time of the session – just over a second down on Hamilton’s time.

His team mate, Daniil Kvyat posted the sixth fastest time but his session came to an early end in the barriers after he suffered a brake failure. He had left the pits with a brake problem and Red Bull called him back to the garage informing him to slowly make his way back, but he headed into the gravel at the hairpin, into the barrier and damaged his front wing.

Sebastian Vettel spun off early in on in the session but recovered to finish fourth fastest, with Nico Rosberg managing fifth after running wide at the final corner on his hot lap.

Valtteri Bottas finished seventh for Williams and Sauber’s Felipe Nasr was eighth.

After sitting out the first practice session, Romain Grosjean headed out to  finish ninth and Jenson Button rounded out the Top 10 in his McLaren. The McLaren team have made some definite improvements with Button only about 0.4 seconds off Grosjean’s pace on the soft tyres.

Pastor Maldonado was fastest through the speed trap but finished only 11th fastest, ahead of Fernando Alonso, Marcus Ericsson and the Toro Rosso youngsters Max Verstappen and Carlos Sainz Jr.

Felipe Massa spins, FP2, Chinese Grand PrixNico Hulkenberg placed his Force India in 16th, ahead of Felipe Massa.

The Brazilian driver’s session also ended early when he locked his rear tyres under braking at the hairpin and spinning off into the barriers – also damaging his front wing. His spin brought out a brief red flag while his Williams was recovered from the track.

Sergio Perez was 18th quickest, ahead of Robert Merhi and Will Stevens for the Manor Marussia team.

Stevens spent most of the session in the garage with a power unit problem but was able to head out onto track in the final few minutes of the session.

Spectator runs across track in second practice session for Chinese Grand PrixThe session was punctuated by a spectator who ran across the pit straight between the flying cars of Ericsson and Hulkenberg.

The idiotic fan was arrested and taken into police custody.

You can watch the madness here.

Spectator runs across track in second practice session for Chinese Grand PrixAnd is if that didn’t make the session interesting enough, a couple was spotted in the stands having their wedding photos taken.

Talk about a High Speed Wedding and all. Let’s hope their marriage is a little slower paced and longer lasting.

If today’s practice sessions are anything to go by, Sunday’s race is going to be very interesting! A lot will depend on who can make their soft tyres last longest – with Ferrari already proving at the Malaysian Grand Prix that their cars are very easy on the rubber. Today too, the Ferraris showed their ability to make their tyres last. Lewis Hamilton completed 11 laps on the soft tyre before seeing a significant drop-off. Sebastian Vettel on the other hand, was still setting decent times after 14 laps on the softer rubber.

There’s still plenty to play for though – Hamilton’s pace advantage is a lot bigger than in Malaysia so Ferrari will need to work hard to catch him if he races off into a lead.
