Lewis Hamilton will suffer a 5 place grid penalty for the Bahrain GP

Lewis Hamilton will receive a 5-place grid penalty for the Bahrain Grand Prix after qualifying today following a gearbox change by Mercedes after final practice this morning.

At the end of the session, he suffered what seemed to be a tyre failure and also incurred damage to rear suspension on the way back to the pits. The Mercedes team has had to rebuild the rear of the car and has decided to replace his gearbox in the process, resulting in the  five-place regulatory grid penalty.

Hamilton finished FP3 fifth fastest.

Esteban Gutierrez and Mark Webber are also facing grid penalties this weekend after being penalised for separate collisions during the Chinese Grand Prix last weekend.
