Mercedes reveals cause of Hamilton’s engine failure

Lewis Hamilton

Following analysis of Lewis Hamilton’s engine failure in Malaysia, Mercedes has found that his engine suffered a big-end bearing failure following a loss of oil pressure.

The engine failure struck Hamilton without warning while he was leading the Malaysian Grand Prix. Hamilton was forced to retire from the race with 16 laps remaining. The engine was returned to Brixworth where more detailed analysis is taking place.

According to a Mercedes spokesperson, “Our analysis has shown that Lewis’ engine suffered a big-end bearing failure. This happened without warning after 618 km and was preceded by a loss of oil pressure in Turn 15.”

This weekend, Hamilton will revert to the engine he used in Singapore. He still has one new engine left in reserve for the rest of the season.
